The first official notice convening a public meeting for people – not just Vale parishioners – to object to the proposed closure of Hougue Jehannet Road behind the Power Station has now been published.

A proposal by Guernsey Electricity Ltd to permanently close Hougue Jehannet, the road running through the middle of its Vale premises, might find more favour if the utility was prepared to discuss with parishioners ways of mitigating the loss of access, the Senior Constable has suggested.

Taxpayer money may be used to help speed up the regeneration of the Bridge area by facilitating the redevelopment of the long-derelict Leale's Yard area. Policy & Resources Committee said this afternoon that it expects to be able to ask the States to enter into an agreement to buy newly constructed homes on part of the site as an investment.

Guernsey Electricity Ltd attended a meeting at the Vale Douzaine room last evening to make its case for the permanent closure of Hougue Jehannet, the road that runs behind the Power Station (pictured below) – but didn't appear to convince the audience.

Vale Junior Constable Bill Cohu has asked parishioners not to blame the douzaine for the number of overgrown roadsides and verges that are affecting the parish – because they don't have the powers to enforce a proper tidy-up.

Guernsey Electricity has confirmed that it intends to make permanent the closure of Hougue Jehannet, the road the runs behind the Power Station, and is to hold a public meeting this month to explain its reasons why.

Designs have been submitted that show what could replace the long-derelict cottage at Grande Havre if Planners approve proposals to demolish Leafy Cove, La Garenne, and permit change of use of agricultural land to domestic garden (490 sq.m.), erect a replacement dwelling with associated landscaping, and create a detached 1.5 storey garage/outbuilding.

Nearly 100 parishioners have yet to pay their parish rates despite final reminders for these being sent out on 20 June. As a result, those who have still not cleared the amount risk facing recovery action unless they contact the Constables' office urgently.

Vale parishioners are being asked to help the States of Guernsey save money by suggesting what public services could be dropped or by coming up with other money saving ideas. In particular, government is looking for thoughts on generating new or increased income; restructuring services, including through outsourcing or procuring them differently; and by reducing, stopping or restricting access to services such as through means testing.

Vale Senior Constable Richard Leale is planning to contact the authorities for more information about a parish road that was closed without notice – and which currently has no definite date for reopening.
