Parking 'fix' means boats are back at Bordeaux

Tue 08 Jul 2025

A freshly cleared and levelled area at Bordeaux is again being used by boat owners in the bay now that steps have been taken by the Vale Constables to stop unauthorised parking on the site.

Granite boulders have been placed around the perimeter to prevent cars and lorries from using the boat lay-up, which was cleaned and levelled by the douzaine after its purchase last year when it became available for sale.

The action was necessary because vehicles were using it and scattering hardcore on the road when they drove off, which was a potential risk for other road users.

Following discussion with the Bordeaux Mooring Committee it was agreed that the area protected by the boulders could be reduced to enable the site to be used for smaller boats and trailers until the lay-up is used by larger vessels in the winter.

Agreement
After a meeting with Mike Scrimshaw, representing boat owners, and Junior Constable John Niles it was decided that the blocks to the north of fisherman's shed would be removed and placed in a line from the south side of shed door towards the road and that area could be used for dinghies until bigger boats get laid up for winter.

This means that registered owners will have parking from outside the fisherman's shed to the north Mr Scrimshaw said the reason the boulders were put there was to stop swimmers parking on the lay-up area and also because large lorries had been parking up there for their drivers' lunch break.

• The douzaine bought the area last year as part of its parish improvements programme and would eventually like to buy the remaining third of the site, which is currently in private ownership.
