The project is being led by Megs Bailey, pictured, who has placed collecting bins around the island, including at the Vale Douzaine Room, where people can donate fabrics to help brighten up Town for Guernsey's special Liberation anniversary next year.
The initiative has two phases – collecting clean cotton fabric of all styles, colours and patterns and then converting the scraps into colourful bunting to be strung from the Weighbridge roundabout to the Slaughterhouse.
Anyone who has unwanted cotton fabric can drop it off at the special bin at the Vale Douzaine room, by the office, which is open weekdays from 10am until 1pm so it can be collected and sorted.
Volunteers for making the bunting are also needed and anyone keen to take part in this community project should contact Megs by emailing [email protected] with your contact details. You can also keep in touch through a special Liberation Day Facebook page, which can be found here.
Deadline
The deadline for bunting completion is March 2025, then by 9th May, the town seafront will be beautifully decorated for Guernsey's big 80th anniversary Liberation Day celebrations.
Ms Bailey told the BBC that she came up with the idea after feeling "a bit frustrated" Liberation Day had started to feel "a bit flat" since the pandemic.
She wanted to reinvent Liberation Day's identity as a "celebration of the 1940s" with a "party atmosphere".
"My parents were here during the Occupation and I know all their stories and how hard it was for them," she said.
"I really don't want to see Liberation Day fizzle out."
