This follows a number of complaints that the earth had suddenly appeared and there were concerns that the material had been fly-tipped.
The circumstances of how an estimated 30 loads of soil embedded with broken glass came to be left just off the car park at Longree are not yet clear but steps are being taken to have it removed as soon as possible.
One dog walker who reported the problem said they only noticed the scale of the problem after their pet started climbing on the mounds but fortunately didn't get cut.
"I'm unsure on whether or not it’s been fly tipped, but, either way it’s extremely dangerous," they told the Constables' Office.
The amount of glass in the heaps, pictured below, made one user of the Common wonder whether the topsoil had been cleared from a derelict vinery site and dumped there.
Whatever the explanation, the material should be cleared and the site restored soon, possibly next week.
