Hedge cutting raised at Douzaine surgery

Two deputies attended Saturday's Vale Douzaine Surgery and responded to parishioners' questions on a range of topics, including those of an island-wide nature.

The headline guest was Deputy David Dorrity, who lives in the Vale, and is pictured with Douzenier Martine Ellis, who hosted the event. They were joined in the audience by Liam McKenna, who is also a Vale-resident deputy, who shows a keen interest in parochial matters and is supportive of the surgeries.

Parish questions included – perhaps unsurprisingly given the time of year – the cutting of hedges, people not cleaning up afterwards, and the condition of some of the roadside verges, with the States not cutting them back on a regular basis.

Other matters raised were the consequences of the States adopting island-wide voting and the impact that has had on voter representation with the loss of parish or district deputies, and development in the Vale itself.

Discussion centred on Leale's Yard, where permission has now been given for an access road to be created at the Creaseys end of the Bridge, and the proposed reclamation of Black Rock by the Vale Castle, which forms part of the Guernsey Development Agency's vision for  the north of the island.

Ms Ellis thanked Deputy Dorrity for attending and responding to parishioners' questions and comments and said the douzaine recognised people appreciated opportunities like these to meet their States members.

The next surgery is to be held at 10am at the Douzaine Room on 25th July and is the last one in this pilot series. The douzaine will be considering the success of the programme and what to do next.
