As part of the Vale Douzaine's ongoing parish improvement programme, new goalposts have been installed at L'Ancresse Common at the Lucksall/Vale Church end – and they are free for anyone in the island to use.
They replace old timber posts that had been there for years and deteriorated to the point where they had to be removed. Vale Junior Constable Bill Cohu, who oversaw the project, says the new ones are galvanised steel and will last for years.
He expressed the parish's gratitude to Vale Rec football club, which generously provided the netting for the posts. In addition, advice was taken to ensure that the netting and the way it has been installed is hedgehog-friendly and won't trap the creatures.
Although – like the rest of the island – the ground is very dry, the area has been mown and is ready for use for formal games or simple kick-abouts.
The area is actually big enough for two pitches. If the demand is there, the Douzaine could consider installing extra goalposts.
