The Vale Douzaine has announced exciting new plans to create a special open space in the heart of the parish – and is also looking for people who want to help with the community project.
The plan is to convert a former quarry into a tranquil oasis for people to enjoy and to improve the area over the years as funds and help become available.
The site was acquired by the parish some years ago after it was filled in. It has now been tidied up and has much potential for improvement.
It is sited just behind the Douzaine Rooms and it is hoped that it will be used by residents at the Guernsey Housing Association's La Nouvelle Maritaine as a quiet refuge and that other parishioners and their families will also enjoy the facility.
A lot of clearance work has already been done by members of the douzaine and Floral Guernsey while States Works has treated a patch of Japanese Knotweed.
The field is looking very attractive at the moment and has been regularly mown by Junior Constable Bill Cohu and is to be used for a wedding celebration in August.
To drive the project forward, however, the douzaine would like some more volunteers who can help with some planting and tidying and contribute ideas to the enhancement of the field. Anyone interested is asked to contact [email protected] for more information or to put their name forward.
Below are a series of images of the field site and some pictures of volunteers who helped earlier this year to kick-start preparing the site – very many thanks to them.
