Ozzy the Tractor wants to stay to the Vale

Wed 03 Jul 2019

An historic tractor which helped Aurigny land planes safely in Alderney and is the same make credited with revolutionising British farming in the 1950s is looking for long term garaging in the Vale.

'Ozzy' is a 1956 Massey Ferguson TEF 20 with a pedigree. It was number 501,295 out of a total of a little more than 517,650 ever built and the model is credited with spearheading the post-war agricultural revival and ending farmers' reliance on cart horses.

Closer to home, this little tractor, with a 26 HP, 2092 cc Standard diesel engine, was employed by Aurigny and used for maintaining the runways in Alderney before being sold to a Sark resident, who used it for many years.

It got its name after being bought by local architect Laurie Ozanne in 1978, who loved and cherished it, having it fully restored in the 1990s. Following his death, 'Ozzy' was sold and acquired by building services professional Olly Day in 2006 and stored near his grandparents' home at Bordeaux for the last 13 years.

Mr Day is now looking for alternative garaging but would prefer to keep the tractor in the Vale for family and business reasons and wondered whether users of the Vale Parish website knew of anything that might be suitable, either for sale or rent.

'Ozzy's a great little tractor with strong links to the Bailiwick and the Vale and I'd be sorry if it had to leave the parish so if anyone has any ideas I'd be pleased to hear from them,' he said.
