Bridge buildings to go to open up Leale's Yard

A number of properties at the top of the Bridge near Creaseys can be demolished to make a new access road to Leale's Yard, Planners have said. The decision means that the redevelopment of the long derelict site has finally moved a step closer.

As a result, the States Property Unit can now go ahead and demolish a section of road frontage buildings along The Bridge and Commercial Road, erect fencing to south of the site (Commercial Road) and erect fencing and create a gated vehicle entrance to part of the site to the east (The Bridge).

The permissions also mean that the existing Bridge bus stop and shelter will be relocated to the New Road junction.

As a result of the application, the new vehicle access to Leale’s Yard will divert traffic from the more heavily pedestrianised areas of the Bridge and prevent large vehicles having to negotiate the car parking areas and the immediate shop frontages. The traffic bound for Leale’s Yard will be contained to the Inter-Harbour Route.

The works are to provide a new entrance to the site which will be used during the demolition and further enabling activities within the wider programme of works at Leale's Yard. Further traffic studies will be undertaken to understand the longer-term traffic control measures if this entrance is to become a permanent feature, the original application said.
