Please don't park on area for boats, says Constable

Tue 17 Jun 2025

Users of Bordeaux have been asked not to park on an area of land there that has just been cleared and levelled for use as a boat lay-up during the winter.

The request has been issued by Senior Constable Richard Leale after the parish employed contractor Rouget's to clean and level the area, which boat-owners pay to use in the winter.

Over the last few days, since the matter was reported in the Guernsey Press, with the photograph above, people have started parking cars on the area and damaging the surface.

This is a problem for two reasons. Hardcore has been laid to provide a stable and flat surface for boats to be over-wintered and wheel ruts are damaging the new surface. Secondly, it appears some car drivers have been wheel spinning off the area and this is scattering hardcore over the road, which is potentially dangerous.

As a result, users of the area are being asked not to use the lay-up as a car park because there's plenty of parking near Woodies or the adjacent car park at Les Petils.

The douzaine bought the area last year as part of its parish improvements programme and would eventually like to buy the remaining third of the site, which is currently in private ownership.

  • People who have moorings in Bordeaux can leave their dinghies on the land in the summer free of charge, but anyone who wants to keep their boat on the site over the winter must get permission from the parish and pay a small fee to do so.
