Vale's help sought for new anti-graffiti initiative

A new initiative has been launched by Guernsey Police in partnership with the island's parishes to help prevent graffiti-related anti-social behaviour – and Vale parishioners have been asked for their help in the trial.

Officers are starting the operation in the Vale and have asked douzeniers to report sites where graffiti tags, symbols, signatures, nicknames, or distinctive wording has been sprayed or applied to property.

In turn, the douzaine is asking parishioners if they have also seen graffiti around the parish so this can be recorded and passed on to the police to maximise community involvement.

"Even information that may appear minor could prove valuable in helping us establish links between incidents and build a better understanding of the issue across the Island," a Police spokesman said.

By working together, the force says there is a real opportunity to develop a clearer picture of graffiti activity across the Island, identify emerging trends, support preventative measures, and, where appropriate, take a coordinated and holistic approach to investigating incidents of criminal damage and anti-social behaviour, rather than dealing with each incident in isolation.

Welcomed
The initiative has been welcomed by the Vale Douzaine, not least because anti-social behaviour, particularly around the Bridge area, has been highlighted at its earlier Douzaine Surgeries.

The Constables' office is coordinating any reports of graffiti in the parish so anyone who has evidence of this anti-social behaviour is asked to send it there, not to police.

Where possible, please include: the location of the graffiti, a brief description of the tag, symbol, or wording, an estimate of when it was first identified, any relevant photographs and details of any associated items or materials found nearby.

Please email this to us at [email protected]  and be aware that there is a tight deadline as the police roll out the initiative across the rest of the parishes. All submissions need to be received by  Friday 28 August at the very latest.
