Wanted: volunteers to help with the General Election

Thu 03 Sep 2020

An appeal has been made by the Vale Douzaine for public spirited parishioners who would like to play a role in the island's first island-wide general election for People's Deputies.

In conjunction with the States of Guernsey Election Team, the parish is inviting anyone wanting to help with this historic event to get in touch with the office and register their interest.

With more people having signed up for the electoral roll and an anticipated large number of candidates contesting 38 seats, it will be a significant and memorable occasion and well worth getting involved in.

Volunteers will be needed at the Douzaine rooms for a minimum of two hours on the 6th and/or 7th of October to act as scrutineers  – in other words, checking people off the printed electoral role and handing out ballot papers to them to vote with.

Anyone offering to play a part needs to be aged over 16 and not a candidate or a member of a political party. The hours are between 8am and 8pm on both days.

If you are interested in helping with this biggest change to the island's exercise in democracy for more than 70 years, please contact the office by phone or email on 244155 (Monday - Friday 10.00 - 13.00) or [email protected] so we can discuss availability with you.

Those who have done it before under the "old" system say volunteering is an interesting and important role and also enjoyable.
